Development of Mid-Atlantic WX.com
Lightning Receiver in Lexington, Virginia

This is the receiving sensor for the new lightning detector. The unit is extremely sensitive; registering lightning strikes up to 300 miles away from Lexington, Virginia. It is housed in the white tube visible in the pictures below.

The new equipment was installed on June 14, 2003 and is 35' above the ground. The shadowy figure is that of Scott Lancey who owns and maintains the weather instruments for
Mid-Atlantic WX.com.

Here is the installed lightning detector  receiver.

On the top of the mast is the anemometer and wind direction sensor that records wind speed and direction for the Mid-Atlantic WX.com weather station.

The white tube is actually 3" PVC pipe which houses lightning sensor.

Directly beneath the sensor is our GPS unit that "fixes" the detector's coordinates as well as calibrates the heading of each lightning strike.

Nearby (not shown) are the other gages that send data to the weather station.
